What Now?
You come home from a long day at work, only to find out that you need a kayak to get through your living room.
Step 1. Where is the water coming from?
The most important step is to find out where the water is coming from. Some of the most common causes are:
- Broken Pipes
- Poor Drainage
- Overflowing sink or toilet
- Weather
- Malfunctioning appliances
- Clogged rain gutters
If you can confirm that the source of water is coming from a broken pipe, toilet or maybe even a malfunctioning appliance, the first thing you should do is shut your water off at the meter. (if you are unsure how to turn your water off, this video does a great job at explaining https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zInC9ivYt2Q)
Step 2. Get The Water Removed From Your Home
Your home is most likely saturated with water. Water can seep its way into your walls, flooring & any other place you could think off. Its important to get the water removed as soon as possible, if you fail to address this immediately, you could have mold growth in as little as 3 days! IMPORTANT: if you are thinking of cleaning up the water yourself, please know that most insurance companies will only cover water damage & not microbial issues (ex. If you had a house flood & decided to clean it up yourself without going through insurance & failed to use proper equipment & month later you realize that you have microbial growth due to failure to remove all moisture). A severe mold remediation job can cost tens of thousands of dollars without insurance coverage! Its always cheaper in the long run to let a professional handle the situation, this assures you that you have nothing to worry about!
Step 3. Fixing The Problem
Before turning your water back on, you want to make sure that the source of the water is fixed. If you used a company like KolorKist, they can send out a preferred plumber to fix your issue. This stops you from having to use multiple companies for all of your repairs.
Step 4. Repairing The Damages
Now that all the water is gone, its time to get your home restored. If you go with any other water restoration company, you will most likely have to find someone to do the repairs for you. With KolorKist, we have a crew on staff that can make it look like it never happened! The best part, is that you would only have to use one company that does it all.
